# Complete Guide to Indian Literature Awards 2025: Sahitya Akademi, Jnanpith & Top Literary Honours

## Sahitya Akademi and Associated Awards

Established by the Government of India in 1954 in New Delhi, the Sahitya Akademi is India's National Academy of Letters. It functions as an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture, coordinating literary activities in 24 languages (the 22 languages of the Eighth Schedule plus English and Rajasthani).

## 1. Sahitya Akademi Award

- Inception: Established in 1954. Awarded annually to writers of outstanding books of literary merit published in any of the 24 recognized languages.
- First Recipients: Included notable figures in 1955. For English literature, the first award went to R.K. Narayan in 1960.
- First Female Recipient: Amrita Pritam (1956, for her Punjabi poem Sunehade).

## 2. Bhasha Samman

- Inception: Instituted in 1996. It honors writers, scholars, editors, collectors, performers, or translators who make significant contributions to classical, tribal, or non-recognized languages to enrich and modernize them.
- First Recipients: Included Dharikshan Mishra (Bhojpuri), Bansi Ram Sharma, and M.R. Thakur (Pahari).

## 3. Sahitya Akademi Fellowship

- Overview: The highest honor conferred by the Akademi on a writer, reserving their name among the "immortals of literature." The number of living fellows is restricted to a maximum of 21 at any given time.
- First Fellow: Elected in 1968, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

## 4. Translation Prize

- Inception: Instituted in 1989 to honor exceptional translations of literary works from and into the 24 recognized languages.

## 5. Bal Sahitya Puraskar

- Overview: An annual award honoring the most outstanding children's books published by an Indian author in any of the 24 recognized languages over the preceding five years.

## 6. Yuva Puraskar

- Overview: An annual award recognizing outstanding works written by young Indian authors aged 35 or younger.
