## Architectural and Historical Firsts in India

- First Dam: Kallanai Dam (Grand Anicut), built across the Kaveri River in Tamil Nadu by Chola King Karikala around the 2nd century AD. It is one of the oldest active water-diversion systems in the world.
- First Existing Stepwell: Mata Bhavani's Stepwell, built in the 11th century in Gujarat.
- First Temple Carved from a Single Rock: Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) at Ellora, commissioned by Rashtrakuta King Krishna I in the 8th century.
- First Temple in Kalinga Architecture: Konark Sun Temple in Odisha, built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty.
- First Multi-Storeyed Granite Temple: Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, completed by Rajaraja Chola I in 1010 AD.
