Classical Music Awards and Honours

(a) Tansen Award: -

  • Tansen Award was founded in the year 1980 by the Madhya Pradesh Govt. and Carries Rs. 1,00,000.
  • This award is presented every year for Hindustani Classical Music, During TansenSamaroh at Gwalior.

TansenSamaroh :

  • TansenSamaroh or Tansen Sangeet Samaroha is celebrated every year in the month of December in Behat village of Gwalior district Madhya Pradesh.
  • It is a 4 days musical extravagance.
  • The event is organized near the tomb of Tansen by the Academy of the department of culture Government of Madhya Pradesh. Artists from all over invited to deliver vocal and instrumental performances.
  • It was originally a local festival but it was at the initiative of B.V.Keskar, who was Union Minister for information and Broad Casting between 1952-1962 that TansenSamaroh was turned into a popular national music festival.

(b) Kalidas Award: -

  • The Kalidas Samman is a prestigious Arts Award presented annually by the govt. of Madhya Pradesh.
  • It was awarded in the fields of Classical Music, Classical Dance, Theatre and Plastic Arts.
  • The award is presented for outstanding achievement in one of the four categories.
  • This award is named after Kalidasa, a renowned classical Sanskrit writer, widely regarded as the greatest poet and dramatist in the Sanskrit language.

(c) Kumar Gandharva Award: -

  • This award is presented annually by Madhya PradeshGovernment. It was founded in the year 1992-93 to encourage creativity among youth in the field of music.
  • This honor is given to the young artistes of age between 25-30years in the field of classical vocal and instrumental.
  • This award Carries Rs. 51,000 and a citation.

(d) Lata Mangeshkar Award: -

  • This award was started in the year 1984-85 by the Madhya Pradesh Government to honor excellent in the field of light Music.
  • In any language singer, Instrumental player and music composer gets the award turn by turn.

(e) MaithilisharanGuptAward :

  • This was founded in the yar 1987-88 by the Madhya Pradesh Governmentto honor the excellence in the field of creative composition in Hindi Poetry.
  • It Contains the cash prize of Rs. 1 Lakh

(f) Sharad Joshi Award: -

  • This award annually given by the Madhya Pradesh Governmentto honor trends in writing other than those relating to literature.
  • This award is given for essays, memories, repertory, diary, letter and satire writing.
  • This award carries Rs. 51000 and a citation.

(g) Shikhar Award: -

  • This award was founded in the year 1980-81 by the Madhya Pradesh Governmentto honor outstanding creativity in the field of literature, music, theatre and visual arts which is given to both tribal and non-tribal forms of art.
  • Shikhar Award in the field of literature is given only for Hindi.
  • The prize money of each Shikhar Award is 31000.

(h) Kishore Kumar Award: -

  • This award was instituted in the year 1998 by the Madhya Pradesh Government.
  • The award is presented every year for outstanding works in the fields of Film Direction, Acting, Script, Writing and Lyrics writing.
  • This award was given at Khandawa, M.P. which is the birth place of Kishore Kumar.

(i) Devi Ahilya Bai Award :

  • It was founded in the year 1997.
  • This award is given to female artists only for excellence in tribal, folk and traditional arts.
  • This award carriers Rs. 100000 and a Certificate of appreciation.

(j) Mahatma Gandhi Award:

  • This award is given by the Madhya Pradesh Governmentto the organization for their outstanding works based on Gandhian Philosophy, in the field of social implements.
  • The recipient is honored with Rs. 500000 and a Certificate of appreciation.

(k) Tulsi Samman Award:

  • It is a prestigious arts award presented annually by the Madhya Pradesh Government.
  • This award is named after Tulsi Das, an Indian Saint, Poel and Philosopher.
  • This award is presented for outstanding achievement in one of the 4 categories of the tribal traditional and folk arts. These categories are art, theatre, dance and music.
  • 1st awarded to Pandit Girran Prasad and HirojiKeshavji in 1983-84.

(l) The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (Science):

  • The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for Science and Technology (SSB) is a science award in India given annually by the Council of Science and Industrial Research (CSIR) for notable and outstanding research, applied or fundamental in biology, chemistry, environmental science engineering, mathematics, medicine and Physics.
  • It is the most coveted award in multidisciplinary Science in India.
  • This award is named after the founder director of the council of SC and Industrial Research Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar.
  • It was first awarded in 1958 (also Instituted in the same year).
  • Any citizen of India engaged in research in any field of SC and Technology up to the age of 45 Years is eligible for the prize.
  • The prize comprises a citation a plaque and a cash prize of 5 lakh. In and to recipients also get Rs. 15000 per month up to the age of 65 years.
  • The name of the recipients are traditionally declared by the director general on every 26th Sept. which is the SIR foundation Day.
  • The prize is distributed by the PM of India.
  • In 1958, the first prize goes to Kariamanick Srinivasa Krishnan for physical sciences.

(m) India Science Award:

  • It is the highest and the most prestigious national recognition by the Govt. of India for outstanding contribution to Science.
  • The award was Instituted by the 10th Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 3 Jan 2003.
  • The first award for the year 2004 was given to renowned chemist prof CNR Rao for his works in solid state and material chemistry by PM Manmohan Singh at the inauguration of the 93rd Indian Science Congress on 3rd Jan 2006.
  • The award is announced and presented every year at the Indian Science congress. (ISC).
  • It Comprises co cash of Rs. 25 lakhs, a citation and a gold medal.

(n) Infosys Prize:

  • It is an annual award given to scientists, researchers, engineers, and social scientists in India by the Infosys Science Foundation and ranks among the highest monetary awards in India to recognize Scientific research.
  • The prize was originally given across five categories i.e. Engineering and Computer, Science, Life Sciences Mathematical Sciences, Physical, Sciences, and Social Sciences but a sixth-category, The humanities-Was added in 2012.
  • The prize for each category includes a gold medallion, a citation, certificate, and prize money of Rs. 55 lakhs.
  • This award was first awarded in 2008.

(o) Gujar Mal Modi Award for ScienceAnd Technology:

  • To acknowledge excellence in scientific research and development, the G.M. Modi foundation has been instituted and annual award.
  • A Scientist of eminence who has made outstanding contribution to science and Tech. Is presented this award on the 9th of Aug. every year on the birth anniversary of the founder of the Modi Group, Rai Bahadur Gujar Mal Modi.
  • 1st awarded in 1988. It was presented to Prof. Satish Dhawan for space and remote sensing Technology. Which was presented by Dr. Shanker Dayal Sharma, the then Vice President of India.

(p) G.D. Birla Award for Scientific Research:

  • It is an award instituted in 1991 by the K.K. Birla Foundation in honor of the Indian Philanthropist Ghanshyam Das Birla.
  • The award is given to outstanding scientific research, mostly during the past 5 Years, under taken by an Indian Scientist who belong the age of 50 living and working.
  • It carries a cash prize of Rs. 1.5 lakhs.
  • It was first awarded in 1991 to Asis Datta for Molecular Biology.

(q) The Vigyan Gaurav Samman:

  • It is a lifetime achievement award for scientific research conferred by the Council of SC and TechnologyGovernment  of Uttar Pradesh.
  • This was 1st awarded in 2000 to Ved Prakash Kamboj.

(r) Om Prakash Bhasin Award:

  • Om Prakash Bhasin award for Science and Technology is an Indian award Instituted in 1985 to recognize excellence in the areas of SC and Tech.
  • It is presented individually or collectively to a group is annual in cycle by Om Praksh Bhasin Foundation.
  • It carries a plaque, a citation and a cash prize of 1 Lakhs.
  • The first recipient of this award was B.P. Pal in 1985 for agriculture and allied Science.

(s) H K FirodiaAward:

  • H.K. Firodia Awards for excellence in SC and Tech are given annually by the H.K. Firodia Foundation.
  • It was instituted and first awarded in 1996.
  • The awards recognize achievement by Indian scientists in any field of SC and aim to promote a scientific sprit among Indians especially the youth of India.
  • The first recipient of this award was A.P.J Abdul Kalam in 1996 for Engineering and space.

(t) J.C Bose Memorial Award:

  • To commemorate the birth centenary of the great Indian Scientist prof. J.C Bose the Association instituted this annual award in 1989 to be given in every alternate year to honor a distinguished scientist of the country.
  • It carries a Gold Medal.

(u) Bhaskara Award:

  • This award is given by the Indian Society of Remote Sensing in its endeavor towards recognition of eminent scientist for their outstanding contributions in the field of Remote Sensing.
