Part XVII of the Constitution of India deals with official languages under Article 343. The Eighth Schedule originally specified 14 languages, which has expanded to 22: Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
