Buddhist and Jain Councils

  1. Jain Councils:-

    For the enlargement of Jainism there were 2 councils were held.

(a) First Jain Council:

  •  Place: Pataliputra
  •  King: Chandragupta Maurya
  •  Year: 322/300 BC
  •  Chairman: Sthulbhadra
  •  Out Come: Completion of 12 Angas to replace the 14 Purvas.

 

(b) Second Jain Council:

  •  Place: Vallabhi, Gujrat
  • Year: 512 AD/500 AD
  •  Chairman: DevardhiKshmasramana
  • Out Come: Final Completion of 12 Angas & 12 Upangas

 

 

2. Buddhist Councils:-

For the enlargement of Buddhism there were 4 Councils were held

(a) First Buddhist Council:

  •  Place: Sattapani Cave at Rajgriha
  •  King: Ajatshatru
  •  Year: 483 B.C
  •  Chairman: Mahakasyapa
  •  Results: Tripitaka is divided into three parts i.e.

Vinaya Pitaka – Ricited by Upali

Sutta Pitaka – Recited by Ananda.

 

(b) Second BuddhistCouncil:

  •  Place: Vaishali
  •  King: Kalashoka / Kakaverna
  •  Year: 383 BC
  •  Chairman: Sabakami
  •  Result: For the first time Buddhism divided in two seats i.e.
  1. Sthaviravadins
  2. Mahasanghikas

 

(c) Third BuddhistCouncil:

  •  Place: Pataliputra
  •  King: Ashoka
  •  Year: 250 BC/251 BC
  •  Chairman: Moggaliputta Tissa

 

(b) 4th BuddhistCouncil:

  •  Place: Kundalvana, Kashmir
  •  King: Kanishka
  •  Year:72 AD
  •  Chairman: Vasumitra
  •  Result: Buddhism was divided into two sects namely
  1. Mahayana (Ideal Worship)
  2. Hinayana (Non ideal Worship)
